A Buyer's Guide To Digital Scrapbook Kits

By Marcella Finlay-Ross

Many people are turning to digital scrapbook kits to capture their memories and the significant events that have taken place in their lives. They can be much easier to use than regular scrapbooking kits and there are several specific things you need to know about them.

Digital scrapbooking kits use a computer in order to lay out digital photos. You then add virtual decorations and add electronic lettering and decorative text accents. Paper scrapbooks do the same thing, but you use actual photographs, glue actual pieces of patterned paper to the paper backing, and add actual embellishments, writing and journal text accents. Digital scrapbooking can be much less expensive than paper scrapbooking, since you can reuse decorative accents. You are arranging them electronically, not physically, so you can reuse elements rather than needing to throw them away if they are the wrong size or shape. Many people prefer digital scrapbooks because they are less expensive to create.

With a digital scrapbook, everything on the page is a digital image. Where a paper scrapbook uses physical pieces of patterned paper or metal or fabric items to decorate a page, everything is reproduced electronically with a digital scrapbook. In order to add things like certificates, ribbons and other mementos, a digital scrapbooker can scan them in using a digital scanner. The image can then be digitally altered if needed. This can include removing stains or watermarks from certificates, papers and ribbons.

Learning which scrapbooking sites have the most complete kits for the least amount of money can help you save. You want to look at each of the kits individually and make sure it has all of the elements that you need to complete a page. The last thing you want to find out is that you need to buy even more digital supplies to finish a page. Most sites will have individual page kits that you can purchase. These are usually the best things for beginners to buy until they learn what they are doing.

If you are short on time, you can also find digital scrapbooking page templates. These are completed pages that are already designed and ready to be used. All you need to do is customize them with photographs and journaling. These can then be shared online or printed out and preserved in an album. Because they are predesigned, someone who is just getting started with scrapbooking may enjoy the professional look of the layouts they can design.

There are also digital scrapbook kits that can make brag books. These are usually smaller albums, often sized 4"x6" and are designed to be easily portable. They are often used by parents or grandparents to show off photos of a new child or grandchild, hence the nickname "brag book". Because these sheets are smaller, you don't even need to send them out for professional printing.

There are more options for displaying a digital scrapbook than there are with physical scrapbooks. You can print them out. You can also display them on a website. This is great, because you can allow family from across the country and around the world to view an album which they may otherwise not get to see. However, a paper book can be more permanent and is great to look through when you do not have access to a computer or the internet.

Finding ways to lower the cost of digital scrapbook kits can make an already affordable hobby even easier to pay for. Whether it is by shopping at better times of the year or getting your albums printed in multiples, thinking creatively can save you quite a lot of money. - 33381
