Decorative Mailboxes - The Story Of The Kansas City Grannies

By Melvin Sentrovski

If you enjoy decorating, you will find this article to be quite interesting. There are plenty of different methods you could use for decorations, and making a decorative mailbox would be an especially exciting project. You could be the one house in your neighborhood that has the snazziest mailbox.

You can really make your personality shine through when you decorate your mailbox, making it a symbol of who you are and what you like, so be sure that you invest some thought into it.

You can so what some people do, and decorate your mailbox every season, but that's not all. A smiley face on your mailbox can really show your wacky side. You can even honor your unique heritage through mailbox decorations.

The need to actually have your name on your box so that the mail delivery person doesn't give your checks to your neighbor and his bills to you is pretty boring, but there's nothing that says it has to look boring. Enhance your last name with a fanciful (but always legible) font in wild and subversive colors -- pink and green, orange and purple, electric blue and gold; the choice is yours! Your mailbox will always get noticed, and you can decide for yourself if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

There are some people who enjoy the pastime of making decorative mailboxes so much that they form groups that are exclusively devoted to making decorative mailboxes. Three years ago, a host of people in Kansas City started what was known as the "Decorating Grannies" group.

These very hip retirement home dwellers put up flyers and advertised in the papers that they would, for a nominal price, totally refurbish and re-adorn people's mailboxes in a very fun, trendy and completely "un-granny" like way. They then donated the proceeds from their creative labors right back to their retirement home so that it could fund more activities for the residents to enjoy.

You might take this story of enterprising old ladies and apply it to you and your group of friends. You might start your own decorative mailbox business and donate the profits to a charity or project you're passionate about, to make the community as a whole better with the money that you give it. You can better the community around you, and you'll have a great sense of accomplishment, as well as adoration from your friends! - 33381
